Abstract: Osteoarthritis (OA), the most common form of arthritis around the world, is a multifactorial degenerative joint disorder characterized by articular cartilage degradation, subchondral bone sclerosis, osteophyte formation, synovial membrane inflammation and afection of extraarticular tissue as tendon, ligaments and articular capsule. Although various factors have been recognized as essential in OA development, there is a strong hereditary component and is considered to be a polygenic disease. The identification of genes
associated with osteoarthritis can help reveal biological mechanisms that may lead to development of new therapeutic targets or biomarkers for early detection and risk stratification. The goal of this
brief review is to offer an overview of the current status of genetics of osteoarthritis.
